Project Rubrics – RTDC

Requirement: every project is different, so read the description sheet very carefully. Twenty Percent. (note that if the requirements are not met, the work may not be graded)

Technique/craftsmanship: every piece you submit must be of the top quality, which means straight cutting/lining with the pencil/pen marks hidden, no visible stains or finger marks. Twenty Percent.

Design (unity, variety, hierarchy, balance, emphasis; center, negative space, periphery): Forty Percent.

Creativity (tension, the unexpected): does not refer to intellectual creativity (meaning-making). Visually speaking only, the work shows deeper thinking of the visual solution to the problem in terms of layout, mutual tension between elements, original dealing of the white/negative space, etc.. Twenty Percent.

Midterm: Introduce the  Inspiration Journal: Examples: Inspirational Journal by TH, inspiration journal by KH, more examples here

  1. in your area(s) of interest (i.e., apparel design, jewelry design, window display design, store design, interior design, architecture, photography, sculpture, general graphic design, styling, etc.), search for fifteen visual images that look like the applications of three projects you choose among all that you did this semester.
  2. write one paragraph of analysis for each visual image. Your analysis must  incorporate the design elements and principles embodied in these three projects and exercises. For example,  if you choose project 01, 02, and 03, you should focus on the following design considerations:
    p01: line, unity, variety, negative shape perimeter;
    p02: rhythm, parallel lines, op art, seamless transition, implied lines;
    p03: proximity, visual texture, implied lines; exercise of non-parallel lines: non-parallel line, variety, grouping;
    p04: texture, shape recognition, proximity, negative space
  3. in Microsoft Word, diaplay each group (one image and one analysis) in a document. On the top of your document, place the title “Inspiration Journal” and your name;
  4. Name it as IJ_yourfirstname_yourlastname.pdf. Save as or convert the document to a PDF file;
  5. Use one gmail account to log into this Google Drive Class Folder, then right click inside the folder to enable the contextual menu so you can upload the file to the folder. The deadline is the last Thursday during the midterm week, by 11:59pm.

If you miss the project intro session and come to studio session , please use the computers in Rm119 first to preview the project requirements and details, you may ask your classmates for further questions. Unless you have valid excuse for your absence, I reserve my time to students who are processing their projects in class and will NOT be responsible of re-explaining the project to you.
